Need Help Falling Asleep?

There are few things worse than lying awake all night (or a good part of it) tossing and turning, just waiting to fall asleep.  You can guess what the next day will be like if things don't work out.

As you are probably aware,  there are nutritional supplements that can be helpful.   And, if you use them correctly, you can avoid the dependency that often results with the use of pharmaceutical products.

Some of the tried and true  ingredients for sleep include valerian root, passion flower and chamomile flowers.  There has already been a lot of good material written about these products.  Equally effective, but perhaps not so well known are the herbs lobelia, pulsatilla and Hops Strobiles.

Lobelia
Some people have trouble sleeping due to interrupted breathing.  Sleep apnea is a disorder where breathing during sleep is interrupted for ten seconds or more, not less than five times an hour through the sleep cycle. The herb Lobelia has been clinically proven to calm and regulate breathing, creating a powerful, steady pattern. Lobelia encourages the brain to repeatedly and frequently send the "breathe" signal to the diaphragm.

Pulsatilla
Pulsatilla can help relieve insomnia that is caused by worry, and not being able to "turn it off". It is said to be particularly helpful for nerve exhaustion in women.  Pulsatilla is considered to be a nervine, which is a plant remedy that has a beneficial effect upon the nervous system in some way.  It has been used to calm and soothe the nerves, as well as reduce stress and anxiety.  Pulsatilla aids in the release of the compounds anemonin and protanemonin which are thought to produce a sedating effect, and it is said to be effective in alleviating hyperactivity and insomnia.

Hops Strobiles
Strobiles Hops is another important sleep-promoting herb with a unique way of working. One component of hops, Lupulin, acts directly on the central nervous system.   In studies conducted in Germany on people who have trouble sleeping, those who were given a combination of valerian and hops reported that they experienced a much sounder sleep. These favorable reports were confirmed by researchers who observed the participants in this study and measured their brain waves as they slept.

As was mentioned earlier, we all have an interest in avoiding the "dependency" that often comes with taking product for problems like insomnia.  Whichever product that you decide on, it is best to avoid taking it on a continual and regular basis. For example, you might take the product for four days and then take three days off.  Alternatively,
you may choose to take your supplement every other day.

This, or course leads to the question, "what do I do on the off days?".  One possibility is to find a different sleep aid with ingredients which have very little in common with the main product that you are using.  You may have to experiment a bit to find the right products for you.

For the liquid, take 30 drops in water about 15 minutes before bedtime. This can be repeated every 20 minutes, if necessary.
